How the LGBT+ Community has Impacted the Music Industry

LGBT+ Month takes place between the 1st and 28th of February 2025 and focuses on the incredible cultural contributions and achievements of the LGBT+ community as well as the current struggles. One of the most notable areas where the LGBT+ community has had a major impact is the music industry, which is an area that has been transformed by many iconic acts over the year and led to greater understanding and celebration of LGBT+ in wider society.

Rise of LGBT+ Artists & Representation

LGBT+ artists have become increasingly prominent and visible in the music industry in recent years. Nowadays, there are many openly LGBT+ artists within mainstream music, such as Lil Nas X, Troye Sivan, and Hayley Kiyoko. There has also been a growth in representation across diverse genres, including country music, with artists like Trixie Mattel and Orville Peck. The emergence of boygenious was another profound moment – a supergroup with all members identifying as lesbian or bisexual.

Impact on Music & Culture

LGBT+ artists have had an enormous influence on music and culture as a whole throughout history. Many of the most prominent names in the music industry have been immensely influential, including LGBT+ supporters like David Bowie, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, and George Michael. Artists like these and others have introduced new sounds, colours, and expressive style to the music world with queer perspectives influencing lyrics and storytelling. Additionally, the visibility of major LGBT+ stars has helped young queer individuals accept and understand themselves.

Challenges & Progress

There has certainly been a lot of progress in terms of LGBT+ acceptance in music and society as a whole, but there is still work to be done. Nearly half of LGBT+ music industry professionals feel underrepresented while 64% of LGBT+ respondents reported experiencing or witnessing micro-aggressions in the industry. Progress is being made, however, with increasing support from allies in the music industry, including mainstream country music.

Social Media & Technology

Of course, social media has played a major role in the growth of LBGT+ music. Platforms like YouTube and Instagram allow artists to share music independently and express themselves, enabling new artists to launch their careers. Additionally, social media can enable artists to come out without risking their careers.

Activism & Awareness

LGBT+ artists are increasingly using their platforms to advocate for queer rights and visibility. Additionally, there are songs that have become LGBT+ anthems for self-acceptance and inclusivity, such as Lady GaGa’s “Born This Way”.

Industry Response & Future Directions

In order to affect change, there needs to be more LGBT+ representation in leadership positions in the industry. In addition to this, there needs to be more resources, mentorship programs, and networking events for LGBT+ professionals in the music industry.

The LGBT+ community has had a profiled impact on the music industry over the years, and as a result, influenced culture and society as a whole.
