In the backwoods of the Midwest lies Indianapolis aka Indy aka Naptown, with a population of over a million people, just a couple hours drive southeast from the Windy City Chicago. Indy skims on public transit, is big on “law enforcement” and local oligarchs and news reporters tunnel themselves from west to east and east to west in an underground chamber underneath some of the northern suburbs, paralleling 146th St while a large corporation gauges the health metrics of every citizen and then tries to shock them or poison them.
Indy is also known as Marion county, a square shaped county with an inside circle of interstate 465, giving it the title of circle city as well. Known mainly for car racing, basketball, and corn, we hoop it up! But besides the ups of throwing a ball or driving a car around in circles, we rock the walls and steel too. The history of writing culture has been around these parts since the early 90’s if not before then. Things are strict around here, many writers have been injured and are often harassed by the police and the legalities of writing are always questioned by those who assume they have some type of authority.
Basically there are the north, south, east, and west sides, a pretty simple grid type system with numbered streets on the north side, continuing into the wealthier suburbs up north beyond the Marion county line. As the advent of the aerosol paint can has given power and joy to millions everywhere, Indy is no stranger to the art and culture of writing.
Panels on freights were being pumped out as early as 93, passenger trains with panels from other cities were spotted in the early 90’s, abandoned factories and buildings were and are still being crushed, as well as under bridge spots with writers rocking it to the river’s edge, and highway spots as well. The first free wall was started in about ‘94 and exists today with the addendum of another large wall added in the 2000’s, all right next to a freight mainline that connects us to Louisville in the south.
