Ephemeral and subversive art in the streets
Paste up is a combination of urban design and art, which is essentially participative, rebellious and subversive.
It is a form of urban intervention that defies rules, allowing artists to Paste Up typographies, illustrations, images and photographs in public spaces. This art is either printed mechanically or painted by hand on paper and then stuck up on the walls with special glue. The surfaces must be both clean and smooth.
This Paste Up technique is done swiftly, which allows the artist more flexibility when choosing site. It reduces the risk of being caught out in the process, specially in urban places, where secrecy is of vital importance. A technique which is widely accepted, as neither formal training nor special abilities are needed. It is accessible to everyone and improves with practice. Neither do the paste up artists need to make a large financial investment.
A Paste Up artist does not wish to make money and is very critical of any kind of publicity. It defies the sale of art in public places and shows a cultural resistance that only needs the attention of the spectator.
As opposed to graffiti, paste up allows the artist to develop more complex works of art in a studio, before taking them out to the streets. It is a democratic form of expression that finds force in its permanence in one fixed place. Far from being an obstacle, this characteristic makes it a constant resistance against the establishment.
Photography is a witness of its ephemeral character, which documents works of this art that defies permanence and is shared on internet. This extends its scope much further than the streets.
The paper and glue phenomenon is global and in constant evolution, thus consolidating itself as a visual
Part of our great cities. It is also a growing transversal and artistic movement, with more and more followers as time goes by, which forms part of our contemporary culture.
Paste Up as a Form of Transforming Public Areas
The basic materials are paper, glue and tools which are used to apply the work of art on the surface.
The ample variety of techniques gives the possibility of working in either a legal or illegal way. Neither of these alternatives guarantees either durability or stability. The legal option is based on obtaining permission for carrying out paste ups in an authorized space. On the other hand, the clandestine paste up depends totally on the freedom of each author, who takes on all the risks.
The posters, depending on their origin, may be original hand drawings, paintings, collages or photocompositions done by computer. They may also be reproductions of original art based on drawings, watercolors, prints from stencils, woodcut or linocut. In most cases the author imprints his or her own style. In this way it is possible to recognize an author even when the work has been reproduced or modified.
Paste Ups reach the streets in isolated forms, opening up furtive spots which will later be attraction sites for many more. They also appear together with previous posters, which will a accumulate with others from the same or a different author.
Each piece of work is part of a larger plan or project. These will be grouped by color, white, black or similar tones. The grouping will also be based on text, types of lettering or images. In this case, the final composition, will have both a visual or thematic entity.
Depending on the dimensions, there are paste ups which measure only a few cm. that show architecture. Others are larger than humans. These are of a gigantic size and very large human portraits. The small works of art may be on silk or rice paper. In the case of medium size work, craft paper, tablecloth paper or the backside of other works of art. Fine paper such as rice paper or silk require one to glue the poster onto the surface. The result is spectacular as the texture becomes transparent and it is difficult to tear down.
The elementary materials for sticking up are: home made glue, a mixture of flour, water and vinegar also known as wheat paste. It is not very resistant to the outside. As it is organic, fungus may soon appear.
White glue used for wallpapering, has good results. In time it will go yellow, so a latex glue is added. This also protects the paste up.
Spray on glues: expensive, but easy to apply, dry quickly, have good adherence to any surface, but are contaminating.
An Urban Cry Born from Counterculture
Posters pasted up in streets have their background during the Belle Epoque in Paris, with artists like Toulouse-Lautrec. In Latin American countries during the 1960s, Argentine artist Alberto Greco, had his own art within urban posters.
During the 1970s and 80s the US paste up was an artistic expression, associated with punks, counter cultural artists as a sign of protest. Both artists and activists adopted this technique, in order to communicate both social and political ideas in a fast and cheap way. It became a powerful tool within urban art, characterized by its visual impact.
Paste up won popularity in cities like New York, where people like Barbara Kruger, Shepard Fairey, Richard Trenton Wright and many others, used it in order to transmit both cultural and political messages by means of posters. Fairley’s work, with its iconic images of Andre the Giant, Zelda B. le Rat, should be looked at, but not considered models to follow, as each artist should be able of creating his or her own style and universe in which to develop paste up.
In Argentina, the BA Paste Up group started a new way of intervening the city of Buenos Aires. Both Google and Wikipedia are a good window to use to learn more about paste up. One must focus both on creativity and clear, simple concepts. Meanwhile, the artist must also experiment with a variety of materials and techniques. This process of exploration is important, for each artist to identify his or her line of creativity and so necessarily specialize in a personal and unique style.
Taking part in workshops, collaborating with other artists and studying the work of the pioneers of paste up, are effective ideas used to acquire knowledge and advance in this form of artistic expression. This must not be used in order to imitate others, but to learn about resources, ideas and different ways of working.
Paste up is characterized by being accessible and inviting people to participate who could be very good at drawing, or have other abilities. These being: photography, creating collages or photomontage. The capacity to select and recontextualize graphic elements, allows us to transform common images into significant components of our new works of art.
Between Art and Vandalism, the Complex Reality of Paste Up
Paste up is a form of art which transforms the skin of our cities. Artists use the streets as large canvasses. This questions a sacred rule about art and where it can be found. Although paste up is temporary, it produces a great impact and breaks the monotony of any urban scene. It invites us to look at, read about and think beyond the walls. It is at the center of every debate about urban art. Whereas some see it as a way of beautifying the city, others consider it vandalism and visual contamination.
In practice paste up artists are either believers or practicing artists. These are clearly different. The believers have made of paste up a way of life. Their profession and principal way of expressing their art. They develop an artistic life which combines the forbidden pasting up in streets and on the other hand, their exhibitions in art galleries and other public places such as interior decorating. In the second case they are better paid for their work.
The practitioners keep a creative diversity not limited by the artistic expression of paste up, but exploring other disciplines. Even forgetting about paper and glue at times. They prioritize their creative process and more than one technique. While the believers live and breathe paste up with passion and professionalism, the practitioners use it as a tool within their box of multiple, creative tools.
Both these groups will never give up their furtive activities and night action. This keeps the adrenaline flowing. They know that the experience of a few hours of night intervention in the city, is a time lived with great intensity, great dynamism, a quite unforgettable and spiritual experience which is difficult to explain.
A furtive dawn in a great city, with or without being caught by the police, is an almost religious experience in itself. It is the least visible but necessary and essential part of furtive urban art.
The Visual Murmur of Paste Up
One of the most notable characteristics of paste up, is that it is short lived. The works of art can be removed, covered up by other artistic interventions or be ruined by rain or snow. This shows it is both transitory and dynamic. The short durability of paste up, makes each poster temporary and invites the spectator to reflect upon impermanence. A possessive attitude in the changing urban space. Each intervention therefore becomes something fleeting, that can only be appreciated for a limited time.
The versatility of Paste Up is another of its great virtues. It allows the use of a wide range of styles and techniques. This enriches the final result while also offering the artists the liberty to explore and experiment without restrictions.
In terms of accessibility, paste up is a viable option for those who wish to express themselves artistically.
There is no need for special abilities or expensive materials. The supplies are quite inexpensive and the technique is easy to learn. This allows anyone to participate in this activity. This characteristic people to do it all by themselves, together with thew punk movement. They were fundamental in the resurging of paste up.
Today it is reinvented by creating new tools and solutions, to limitations and needs which keep appearing. These are: means of transporting the glue, poles and other elements.
At present, accessibility to paste up is enhanced by new technologies and tendencies. This helps quick interventions in public places, despite the limitations that can appear when working with very large posters.

The Perception of Paste Up
The negative perception of paste up, is usually linked to the destruction of the works of art. If it has been properly pasted, it will be both resistant and durable. The torn pieces of paper stuck to the walls and posts will give a negative impression in the city. The idea of urban vandalism or aggression, comes from the pieces which have been destroyed.
Destruction also offers opportunities for new aesthetics, inspired in the Wabi sabi concept, which appreciates the beauty which lies in that that is imperfect and short lived. Few sensibilities take advantage of this deterioration, to discover that which is imperceptible.
The concept of Wabi sabi discovers prints on worn out, eroded surfaces. These are deteriorated both by nature or by some kind of aggression and tearing away. This produces something totally new, an aesthetic ruin.
Some radical people perceive Paste up as visual contamination. They do not judge publicity in this way despite the fact that it constantly bombards us with ideas. This sector only sees stuck up papers which affect their neat and tidy city.
Others perceive Paste up as a free, unpredictable and surprising urban beauty, which transforms the city with colorful and optimistic messages.
A certain point of view and much disinformation, that exists in certain media, contributes to impoverish public opinion and create a debate. This reduces certain forms of expression from graffiti to urban art, as simple vandalism.
This simplification, loaded with negative connotations, not only ignores the subtle difference of any Paste up posters, but also takes its motivation and meaning out of context. This also produces a distorted perception of reality and perpetuates stereotypes.
There is more: the system through its mechanisms of social control, not only determines the difference between right and wrong, but also determines both division and hostility between different urban artistic expressions.
These are: urban art, muralism and graffiti. While aggravating the differences between each one of these movements, it tries to weaken them and gain control over the artist who take over public spaces. This must be seriously reflected upon.
Evolution and Future of Paste Up.
Paste up has evolved towards a more complex practice by incorporating collage and decollage. Digitalization and social media have transformed the creation, diffusion and sharing of this type of art. Artists can now resort to a large variety or resources and images from all over the world. Artificial intelligence can help artists collaborate with each other at a global level.
Paste up today can be both virtual or a PDF that can be shared all over the world and be printed thousands of kilometers away from its creator.
Although many artists work in secret, there is a growing recognition of urban art as a legitimate form of cultural expression.
This allows Paste up artists to take part in festivals and monographic exhibitions, organized by artists and not by institutions, which occurs in the case of muralism.
The Paste Up collage also appears as an element of decoration, covering surfaces and inspiring open emotions, as they contain many different images.
An interesting aspect is the repairing of the, done by the artist, by using previous aged posters as a background for the new interventions.
Paste up can be one of the means by which to access contemporary art, specially based on fragments of urban images (decollage), and its fusion with other techniques. The future of Paste Up can also be digitalized from the original and thematic molds. This increases exponentially thanks to social media and its growing diffusion and participation in art festivals.
The true enemies of Paste Up will carry on being all kinds ok atmospheric adversity, like rain and dampness, the passing of time, fungus, bacteria and plagues such as: snails and silver fish.
Publicity of guerilla and circus posters, visually compete with Paste Up. Vandalism and tearing down by people, also shortens the life of these posters.
Festivals as Combinations for Crossing Frontiers
The growing appearance and consolidation of monographic festivals of Paste ups, in which a real layout of walls exists, one can observe, through social media, many different styles when showing on some surfaces exists with such diverse material.
It is a field in which actions of exchange and collaboration occur, originally organized by a group of urban artists, who share a similar way of working. It is a way of being known internationally. Both being there and being seen from afar, take place and are very attractive. Appearing in the results of a festival, become important as one then exists and can be visualized in a given place and time. The principal “you are seen therefore, you exist”, takes form.
The growing participation confirms a call for meeting together. The problem is usually a disorganized participation of the artists. There must be basic rules. The number of posters, their size and themes are necessarily regulated.
Material is received from all over the world, but quantity and size are usually stated before the event.
There are Paste Up artists who periodically insist on participating in annual festivals, which are repeated all over the world. This gives them a certain status in the Paste Up world by being seen there.
These events contribute to the formation of an artistic community, that virtually shares both experiences and knowledge. At certain moments, there are also trips, meetings and companionship between artists from different origins.
It is evident, that in order to grow and get known, Paste Up needs the support from institutions, incorporating their patronage.
This desired back up includes means of communication, to those who are asked for a more qualified version in treating this phenomenon, which joins streets with art and the other way around.
Typologies in Paste Up Interventions
The construction of murals with materials and funds received from all over the world, I have placed in the typology as follows. It is applicable to the different forms sticking up the Paste Up material, both in festivals as in furtive praxis in urban spaces.
Magnet Form
In a certain spot, all the pieces are placed around the first one. ‘To open the spot’ is considered a sign of maturity, which implies breaking the ‘white page’ of a wall, that has not been intervened, has just been painted or cleaned.
It is usually the beginning of collaborative combinations that invite others to participate. Please read: The Theory of Broken Windows. It is used by those who seek both cleanliness and uniformity in our streets. This prevents the growth of these ideas in zones which participate.
Photo Album Type
These interventions are usually presented in an independent manner, as if the pieces presented were part of great collection. Initially the predominating idea was that all the pieces should be seen. They should not be touched without being curated, this allows to lay out and construct new collective work of art, using all the given material.
Fear of Empty Spaces Type
In contrast with the initial tendency to fill up all the spaces, this type of mural encourages an organic composition in which each one of the posters is related to the other in a respectful way, by overlapping and placing them together. The result of this composition that is about a contemporary baroque style, without a defined artistic direction, allows each piece to input its singularity to the whole.
Size is the Key Type
Size is key is a composition that is characterized in the special organization of the pieces according to their sizes. The largest posters are placed first and are visible at the back, behind the smaller pieces. This layout allows one not only to appreciate the diversity of styles and techniques, but also to respond to the needs of the artists. They make themselves visible in a surrounding which is saturated by art.
Renaissance Type
This type of mural seeks to imitate the aesthetic values of the Renaissance, creating ambitious compositions that are both balanced and harmonious. They gather around a central piece, of a larger size and beauty. This is the way in which the remaining pieces or posters are organized.
This generates a sense of unity and proportion. It also for a visual cohesive composition, even when multiple pieces belonging to different artists are included. The central piece is the visual base on which the rest of the work leans.
Design Unity Type
The Paste Up murals of this kind, can be distinguished by their curatorial approach and collaborative characteristic. The artistic director guides the group of artists in the creation of a mural. Despite the diverse styles it presents a unified aesthetic, thanks to the careful preparation of the background.
Unique piece
When the Paste Up piece possesses its own specific importance and needs a precise space of its own, due to its characteristics and visual themes. A variety in number, not in theme, is the type known as serial reproduction. When the author seeks a certain effect, determined by the repetition of the same motive all over the available space. Playing with the repetition of identical pieces or different ones of the same theme.
I observe the frequency of the use of human images usually realistic, taking the importance of the human figure as an element of the visual whole.
Paste Up just as any other artistic expression, is subtly competitive and personal ego is quite present.
Each artist seeks his or her “getting up”, that is, to attract public attention as well as curators. This is always the best reward. To feel that one exists.
A common idea in festivals is to present very large pieces, they have a better chance of being selected and stand out in the final compositions. Urban legend which surrounds this idea, reveals the importance that the artists allot to the visibility of their work.
It is true that after sending the Paste Up material, to any part of the world, one looks desperately for the place in which ones own piece or pieces appear.

Summary
Paste up is a silent revolution that transforms cities. This simple and accessible technique has made it more democratic, thus allowing any person without qualifications, to express, under his or her responsibility a personal vision in public spaces.
As this movement defies the rules and conventions of traditional art, Paste Up has generated a vibrant and diverse cultural movement.
From the beginning, as a subversive form of expression, it has evolved to the extent of becoming a global phenomenon. This has generated debates about property freedom of speech and the role of art in society.
What makes Paste Up so special is its ability to connect with people and transform the streets into creative spaces, accessible to everyone. This is where we are now…
Long live Paste Up!

Editor’s Note – Below is the Author’s original Spanish version of this article
PASTE UP, creatividad, accesibilidad y rebeldía
Evolución y futuro del Paste up
Tipo fear of empty spaces
Tipo Size is key
¡Larga vida al Paste-Up!
