The new NFT art platform taking digitised street art into the Metaverse
METAWALLS BERLIN is the new NFT art platform from founders Ania Pilipenko and Michael Schneider. Dedicated to Berlin Street Art & Contemporary Urban Culture, METAWALLS takes original murals & physical artworks into the metaverse with a virtual Art Gallery in the Voltaire District of Decentraland, ‘The Embassy’. In close collaboration with the agency Street Art bln, METAWALLS BERLIN is working with artists who have been engaged in the scene for several years, producing commissioned works at freely accessible community walls in the public spaces of Berlin. The gallery´s first exhibition will feature exclusive NFT’s/CO-NFT’s (non-fungible tokens) of remaining Urban Art, as well as some important walls that no longer exist.
METAWALLS Collective Ownership NFT (CO-NFT) realises a new approach to NFT ownership, placing importance on democratic ownership. A typical NFT is held by one individual or party, whereas with the CO-NFT concept a shared ownership of individual artworks is now possible. METAWALLS have developed an App that divides the digital image into parts, assigning each with its own smart contract for provenance. Each share of the work carries individual properties relating to the physical artwork, which may influence value.
METAWALLS mission is to provide fair, democratic market participation for artists and their work. Smart contract agreements are made directly with collaborating artists. The first CO-NFT release was a collaboration with Jim Avignon, and his ‘Doin it cool for the East Side II’ mural at the Berlin Wall Memorial. Jim’s artwork has lived for decades as a commentary on the commercial exploitation of artists and their works, making his involvement all the more impactful. NFT’s represent a paradigm shift for creative distribution.
The METAWALLS gallery ‘The Embassy’ is an open exhibition and communication space, where visitors enter an expansive virtual property inspired by Berlin architecture. Large format Urban Art works are presented on 40m high concrete texture walls, with a total coverage area of 11,000 square meters. This impressive design conveys the feeling of being physically present in front of the works, at scale. ‘The Embassy’ exemplifies the mission of METAWALLS Berlin with regard to art, commerce, and the new possibilities for street artists and collectors alike, as the world turns its attention to the digital arena.
