(LONG ISLAND CITY, NY—September 11, 2023) The Experimental Space Gallery at 43-01 presents ReConstructed, 3D photography from tech innovator and 9/11 survivor Ken Daniels. On view from Sept. 29th – Sept. 30th, 2023, ReConstructed is anchored by a self-portrait series and includes selections from Daniels’ Art on Architecture series. Both series examine a post-9/11 NYC through the lens of virtual reality.

Using a 3D scanner, Daniels precisely maps his subjects down to the millimeter and creates photo-realistic simulations from the scans. He then virtually re-lights his subjects and employs virtual 2D cameras to take photographs within the digitally created 3D spaces. The resulting pictures would be impossible to capture in real life.

Daniels’ techniques and themes in ReConstruction co-exist in symbioses. Daniels explains, “The technology I use to create 3D photographs is intrinsically linked to the subjects. Photogrammetry is an indispensable tool in architecture and construction. In my Art on Architecture series, I examine the relationship between graffiti and the city as a de facto canvas. I use 3D scanning tools used for construction. Without that construction, there would be no walls for the graffiti – no walls to hang my photographs. After 9/11, NYC rebuilt. It reconstructed. But not just its buildings. People were damaged – scarred by the terrorist attack. I am one of those people. I have had to reconstruct myself. My 3D self-portraits reflect that personal journey of rebuilding myself bit by bit.”

The exhibition will challenge viewers to reconsider the “criminality” of graffiti. It will invite observers to step into a 3D NYC that is both familiar and strange. At the same time, it will highlight the incredible resilience of NYC and serve as a reminder of the human capacity to heal and rebuild.

ReConstructed will be displayed on Sept. 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sept. 30th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be an opening reception on Sept. 29th. View ReConstructed at the Experimental Space Gallery at 43-01 22nd St., Long Island City, NY, 11101.
