UP4 – From Detroit to SoHo: The Rise of Konstance Patton
In the run-up to our 5th Anniversary exhibition, we’re publishing some stories from the UP archives. From Issue 4: Politics – During the height of the chaotic year, social distancing became our lives. Stores boarded up for fear of rioting and looting, giving the city an apocalyptic look; decked in raw plywood sheets in place of windows. However, artists saw these plain plywood sheets as fresh canvases that could be used to beautify the city and share their messages through art. One such artist was Konstance Patton.

New York based artist, Amir Diop has brought to life a fable about a sly lion cub who learns a
wholesome lesson in morality. Through the lens of Diop, he reflects on his own childhood in
the twenty-six piece, Lionel the Lying Lion©️ collection, accompanied by an easy to read
written tale, audio narration and AR animation. -
Wood You March: Plywood as Canvas
Renowned NYC graffiti artist Optimo NYC curated an exhibition of plywood boards painted on retail storefronts in 2020 in support of the Black Lives Matter movement at Sun Art NYC gallery in Brooklyn. In addition to plywood boards from 2020, the show displayed other works of art on wood at the opening reception on 3/8/2023. Check out Kurt Boone’s photo recap of the event!
